The research, which was conducted by Auckland University’s National Institute for Health Innovation (aided by Otago University), revealed that taxing sugary, carbonated drinks could help avoid deaths from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and diet-related cancers.

The study also estimated that the tax would help reduce energy consumption by 0.2 per cent (20jK a day).

Lead researcher and nutrition Professor Cliona Ni Mhurchu said that the ones who will be first affected by the changes would be Maori, Pacific, and younger consumers.
